Park City Fly Fishing Report Summer

Current Report June/July 2024
June 28 – July 16 The past month has been great on all of our local stream. With two years of above average snowfall the rivers are in great shape and so are the trout. Both the Middle Provo and Lower Provo are fishing great. Look for PMD’s, Caddis, Yellow Sallies and midges. The Green Drake hatch is still going on the Middle Provo but will be ending in the next week. Pmd’s, Sallies and Caddis are producing good sized trout on both of the Provo Rivers.
The smaller streams have been on fire the last few weeks with good hatches of Drakes, Stoneflies, Caddis and PMD’s. Dry dropper is the way to go on most of our smaller streams.
Park City Fly Fishing Forecast Summer
There are a whole list of smaller streams within about an hour from Park City that you can’t access in the Winter months. Summer is a great time to walk a stream and cast dry flies throughout the day.

Middle Provo River Summer

Next we have one of the most sought after hatches of the year. The Utah Green Drake. It’s a huge greenish mayfly that hatches on the Middle Provo in early July and lasts for a couple weeks. They hatch at around 11:30 am and can last for a couple hours. This hatch is famous for producing big trout on dry flies. Use Hair Wing Drakes, Stimulators or Deer Hair Drakes. Nymphing will produce trout all day. I like using Split Case patterns in brown, black and olive.
PMD Hatch
Beginning at about the same time the Dakes are coming to an end, the PMD’s will start. On the Middle Provo River they hatch from July through October. You’ll know this medium sized mayfly from it’s yellow color. They start off in the 16-18 size range and by the end of Summer are size 20-22. They hatch at around 1 or 2pm in the afternoon. Comparaduns and No Seeums are excellent dry fly choices. Nymphing with PMD emerger patterns will produce trout all Summer. Mayhems, Barrs and Split Case PMD patterns work great.

Lower Provo River
Summer fly fishing on the Lower Provo River is pretty awesome. The trout are in great shape from the higher river flows. They put on most of their weight through the high water and are super healthy. Dry fly fishing is good at times but nymphing will produce nice trout all season.
Lower Provo Bugs
The Lower Provo is a sow bug factory and they are a staple in the trouts diet. They range from size 24-12 but in the Summer months they are size 16-20. Use different shades of grey. You’ll see PMDs here about a month earlier than on the Middle Provo River. They go from early June through July and are sized 16-18. Look for them to hatch around 1-3pm.
You’ll also see good numbers of caddisflies through the warmer months. Stimulators, Elk Hair Caddis and other standard caddis patterns size 12-18 work great. Nymphing caddis patterns in the fast water is agreat technique on the Lower. Use Lawsons, Shammy Caddis, Boogers and Sparkle Pupas.
There are a good amount of golden stoneflies on the Lower too.Try using yellow Stimulators size 14-10. Use Iron Sallies and Copper Bead Golden Stoneflies for nymphs in size 14-10.
